Job Description
Reports to: Division Chief, Student Development, Preston Slayden
Department: Disability Support Services
Division: Educational and Student Services
Classification: Non-classified (Exempt from Fair Labor Standards Act)
Duties and responsibilities
- Coordinates and manages the process for providing support services to students with disabilities campus-wide
- Includes but is not limited to
- Conducting intake interviews; communicating to students the accommodation process and resources on campus; and referring students for other appropriate services
- Collecting, verifying, and maintaining disability documentation and other relevant information
- Determining eligibility for services and appropriately communicating information about disability accommodations and servicesOverseeing provision of auxiliary aids and services, including materials in alternate formats, interpreters, transcribers, lab assistants, adaptive technology, etc.
- Providing individual counseling related to disability issues and accommodation needs as well as more general student development
- Documenting communication and events by writing and filing case notes
- Works closely with the campus community to further the goals of the department
- Includes but is not limited to
- Developing and recommending policies and procedures
- Providing technical assistance to faculty, staff, and administrators
- Educating faculty, staff, and administrators regarding legal requirements and other disability issues
- Maintaining cooperative working relationships on campus
- Making recommendations regarding program access, including purchase of adaptive technology
- Making recommendations regarding facilities to ensure compliance with ADAAG
- Serving on campus committees, including the ADA Committee (CADA)
- Supervises full-time and part-time staff
- Includes but is not limited to
- Hiring, training, and supervising staff
- Providing appropriate professional development opportunities
- Following institutional personnel policies.
- Manages departmental budget, oversees grant budgets through supervision of grant staff, and seeks external funding
- Includes but is not limited to
- Supervising maintenance of spreadsheets reflecting all budget transactions
- Supervising reconciliation of program spreadsheets with Banner
- Overseeing purchases and other expenditures
- Projecting future needs
- Developing and submitting grant proposals to supplement funds and services offered
- Plans program goals and activities; evaluates program effectiveness; and writes reports.
- Includes but is not limited to
- Developing, implementing, and updating a 5 year plan
- Working with staff and administrators to establish priorities
- Developing and implementing assessment tools
- Writing monthly and annual reports
- Acts as community liaison
- Includes but is not limited to
- Networking with disability agencies and other community organizations providing services to students
- Providing technical assistance to other postsecondary institutions
- Performs other related duties as required
Minimum qualifications
- Master's degree in rehabilitation, special education, counseling, social work, higher education, or related field
- Four years experience in the field, preferably in higher education
- Education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas
- Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA
- Budget management
- Supervision of staff
- Organizational skills
- Writing skills
- Communication skills, including public speaking
- Computer skills, including data base, spreadsheet, and word processing
Additional desirable qualifications
- Education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas
- HTML and Website Development, including knowledge of web accessibility challenges
- Adaptive technology for people with disabilities
- Experience in a disability support program in higher education
- Policy development
