It is the policy and practice of UALR to create inclusive learning environments. Having this student in your course will give you the opportunity to evaluate your course design in terms of its inclusiveness of student diversity. Here are some strategies that can move your course toward universal design and that may eliminate the need for further accommodations/modifications for this student:
Use teaching techniques that appeal to both visual and auditory learners.
Incorporate hands-on activities for kinesthetic and active learners.
Emphasize active listening and participation.
Provide a balance of theory and application.
Allow time for formulating questions and responses.
Organize class time in a predictable format.
In addition to these modifications, the student is eligible for the following accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Such academic accommodations are provided in the spirit of equalizing opportunity rather than lowering standards or waiving requirements. Please meet with the student individually to discuss specific course requirements, identify areas that may be affected, develop a plan of action, and work out the logistics for providing the accommodations listed above. It's also important to follow up before and after exams to ensure that implementation is effective.
If you have any concerns about these modifications or accommodations compromising an essential requirement of your course, please discuss this with the student and/or call us at 569-3142 (voice or tty) to discuss these concerns and work out alternatives. We look forward to working with you.
